The evolution of Open Banking? The Payment Systems Regulator’s discussion paper on data

In June 2018 the UK’s Payment Systems Regulator (‘PSR’) issued a discussion paper on data in the payments industry, which it is using as an opportunity to “start a conversation on how data is used in payment systems, so we can make sure it works for everyone.” The PSR’s discussion paper identifies that payments data could open the door to new business models and ways to access the payments sector for payment service providers (‘PSPs’) and end-users, enhancing competition and innovation. Angus McFadyen and Henry Burkitt, of Pinsent Masons LLP, provide their analysis of the discussion paper and how the PSR’s view of the payments industry could be changing.
