The shipping sector: Exposure to cyber risk and insurance considerations

Over the past few years the exposure of the shipping industry to cyber risk has increased exponentially with the networking of ships’ operating systems and information systems and their connection to the internet. In the past 12-18 months, there have been a number of efforts to further ready the shipping industry for cyber threats, including at a regulatory level, with, for instance, the International Maritime Organization (‘IMO’) publishing its ‘Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Risk Management’ in July 2017. Simon Cooper, Partner at Ince & Co, reports on the nature of the risk and the industry and regulatory response, before considering in some detail the insurance implications.
