Editorial: The risks are clear with chip vulnerabilities but public policy is uncertain

January’s news was dominated by stories about chip vulnerability, Meltdown and Spectre. The security community is rightly alarmed, due to the concentration in the chip manufacturing industry and the reach of their markets. Many of us will have been notified by our organisations that we have to update the operating systems on our phones, providing a clear illustration of the reach of the problem and the volume and velocity of risk.
