Sport & Data Protection
8 April 2008 Field Fisher Waterhouse, 35 Vine Street London EC3N 2PX
Introduction:
As events over the past year have revealed, the balance between the need for athlete data and the duty to respect privacy and child protection laws is becoming strained. Under the supervision of anti-doping authorities and under agreements with betting organisations, sporting organisations are collecting large amounts of personal data from athletes for doping tests and match-fixing investigations.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has published a draft International Standard for the Protection of Privacy, which will come into effect in May this year. It creates minimum privacy and data protection standards that parties collecting personal data to tackle anti-doping in sport must adhere to.
Sporting organisations also hold large amounts of data on ‘fans’ and event spectators - data that is being requested by event organisers and law enforcement authorities to tackle the threats of terrorism and hooliganism. Again, a balance must be struck.
This World Sports Law Report full-day briefing will address these issues.
